Authentic Intentionality

 John Haugeland

Abstract:

(Invited Talk)

Original (not "intrinsic") intentionality is essential to genuine cognition. The paper sketches a positive account of what is required for a "system" to have original intentionality. The main conclusion is that original intentionality presupposes an ability to accept responsibility. Thus, contrary to the assumptions of many researchers, responsibility is an essential topic of cognitive science.
