Abstract:
We studied the possibility of endogenously modulate
Inhibition of Return (IOR). Since IOR is a reflexive and automatic
function mediated by ancient structures of the brain, it is a good
framework for studying the modulation of automatic functions by
voluntary higher processes and understanding the neurobiology of
automaticity and control, from an evolutionay perspective. We used
Posner's cueing paradigm with exogenous and endogenous cues at the
same trials. Monocular presentation enabled us to test the temporal
and nasal hemifield separately. The asymmetric structure of the
retino-tectal pathway was reflected in the results. In the temporal
hemifield IOR could not be modulate. In contrast, in the nasal
hemifield endogenous orienting of attention could delay IOR.
