From WIRN89 to IJCNN2000: 10 years of neural networks in Italy

 Eros Pasero

Abstract:
(Invited Talks)

In 1989 the first italian workshop on Neural Networks (WIRN 89) ratified the birth of an organized research activity dealing with Artificial Neural Networks in Italy. As a matter of fact the neural networks tale in Italy begun in early '60s with Prof. Eduardo Caianiello, a pioneer of the world research in this field. But only at the end of the 80's the italian scientific community was able to collect different groups and interests in a coordinated activity. MURST and CNR decided to fund several projects dealing with ANNs and new scientific groups were involved in the research. In early 90's 50 million dollars were invested by MURST in a large industrial project dealing with all possible aspects of neural networks, from the biological implementation to the silicon fabrication. Also European Community decided to fund research projects in ANNs and several italian universities and industries participated to this activities. In USA INNS was the first society trying to organize the research in ANNs at world level. The first world conference was organized in San Diego, CA, at the end of the 80's, A great enthusiasm involved both industries and academic communities and in the following years this conference became more and more important, sponsored also by IEEE, Japanese Neural Network Society and European Neural Network Society. Ten years went by: in 2000 this conference will leave USA to come to Italy: what happened? This presentation will try to analyse the reasons of the success of the italian ANNs in the scientific community and the consequences for the industrial world.

Eros Pasero, born in Alessandria, Italy, on 1955, received his M.S. degree in electronic engineering from the Politecnico of Torino in 1980. From 1980 to 1987 he was with the Politecnico of Torino, involved in multiprocessor system design. He was engaged in the development of TOMP, a multimicroprocessor system based on Z8000 microprocessors. In 1982 he, together with his group, received the CILEA-SPERRY international award for computer science. From 1987 to 1990 he was Associate Professor of electronics with the II University of Roma. In this period he was engaged with the design of analog circuits for Artificial Neural Networks. Together Texas Instruments in 1990 he built the first italian neural integrated circuit based on floating gate transistors. In these years he was involved in some italian and european projects (MADESS, Biotecnologie, Esprit Nervess, Progetto Speciale CNR Reti Neurali Artificiali) dealing with microelectronics and neural networks. Since 1991 he is again with the Politecnico di Torino where he is managing NeuroLab, a laboratory for the study and development of neural networks. Together SGS-Thomson he developed NESP, an analog neural processor based on EEPROM technology. In 1993 he was with the International Computer Science Institute at the University of California, Berkeley, as visiting professor. He is now involved in a large european project (ANNIE) for the development of neural techniques to emulate human movements in CAD environments. Prof. Pasero has more than 100 original papers and some patent applications in electronic circuits. He was member of several scientific committee of international conferences (ISCIS, WIRN, FPGA, DSP, ESP, ECS, IJCNN) and editorial board of the Journal of Electrical Engineering. He was one of the founders of SIREN, the italian society for neural networks.
