Abstract:
There is little doubt that contextual information plays a
crucial role in lexical ambiguity resolution in silent reading.
Numerous reading studies have demonstrated that processing time on
an ambiguous word varies as a function of the context in which it
appears. In past eye movement monitoring experiments we have
demon-strated that discourse topic, and anaphoric referent
relations influence the process of integrating the selected meaning
of an ambiguous word into the on going discourse representation. In
contrast, factors such as word repetition and meaning dominance
have been shown to affect the time it takes readers to access the
words' meanings. I will report on a series of eye movement
monitoring experiments examining additional contextual factors that
may influence the resolution of lexical ambiguity in silent reading
for comprehension.
