Abstract:
Abstract: The medial temporal lobes are critical for normal
explicit recognition memory. Although lesion studies in rats and
nonhuman primates suggest that different regions within the medial
temporal lobes (i.e., hippocampal and parahippocampal regions)
support distinct memory functions, there is little evidence for
such a functional specialization in humans. The current study
examined recollection- and familiarity-based recognition processes
using a receiver operating characteristic procedure in patients
with relatively restricted hippocampal lesions (hypoxics and
temporal lobectory patients), and patients with lesions involving
hippocampal and prehippocampal regions (stroke patients). The
patients with prehippocampal lesions exhibited deficits in
recollection and familiarity. In contrast, patients with restricted
hippocampal lesions exhibited selective deficits in recollection.
The results indicate that hippocampal and prehippocampal regions in
humans support distinct recognition memory functions.
