Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to enhance our understanding of
the complex interaction between phonatory and articulatory
processes. Specifically, we studied the influence of the active
laryngeal specification associated with lexical tone on the
dynamics of the vocal tract in the production of Mandarin Chinese
vowels. Six subjects participated in the study and their vowel
productions for different Mandarin lexical tones were compared.
Findings show that there is supralaryngeal influence on laryngeal
dynamics, but no systematic dynamic patterns are observed for the
influence of lexical tone specification on the vocal tract
shape.
